Wisbech and the locality
The Market Town and Port of Wisbech was the ancient Capital of the Fens. In Medieval times it was a fortified town, and four hundred years ago it was one of the largest Ports in Britain. It flourished again in the 18th century and its character today is that of a Georgian market town.

Today Wisbech is a Commercial Port and has a yacht Marina. Food processing and distribution are important industries. The surrounding Fens support rich arable farming. Tourism is growing.

Pevsner, in his series of books, The Buildings of England, called Wisbech "one of the most attractive towns of East Anglia".

The Fens are noted for their wonderfull skyscapes; many of the photographs on this website have captured the effect of cloud and light which are commonly to be seen.
